About Us

Bighorn Construction currently services southeast Alberta as a General Contracting company, with many in-house services, including concrete pads and foundations, framing, metal cladding and general labour. From new construction to renovation, Bighorn Construction can handle projects of all kinds in commercial, agricultural, industrial and residential environments.

With the help of Bighorn’s employees, we plan to serve Medicine Hat for many years to come.

Our History

Bighorn Construction (2005) Ltd.

Founded by Jim Jackson in 1987, Bighorn Construction was primarily a concrete structure company working on bridges and irrigation structures. Operating out of Bow Island from 1987 through 1999, the company was eventually moved to Medicine Hat and had already branched out to commercial and residential construction. In 2005, Jim sold the company to Chris Friesen.

Chris studied civil engineering technology at NAIT, prior to taking a position with Defence Construction managing construction projects on several Canadian Forces Bases across Alberta. In 2004, Chris and his family were transferred to CFB Suffield and decided to make Medicine Hat their permanent home; eventually leading to the purchase of Bighorn Construction.

Dear Chris,

I wanted to take a moment express my appreciation on a fine job you and your company did for us.

As I’m sure most business owners feel that a project like this can be daunting to say the least. It is a huge investment and have a company and staff like yours, show such professionalism take care of those concerns. From start to finish you and your staff, took charge of the details and schedule, giving myself great peace of mind that everything was thought through and would go without incident. I am very pleased to say that it went exactly that way. Your on-site staff went above and beyond to make the small details turn out even better than we imagined. Your expertise brought the right trades for the job and it was a pleasure to see, just how smooth things can go.

Chris, I would be pleased to recommend your company to anyone who is planning a new project or renovation project. Thank you to you and your staff.

John Hanewich

Bighorn Construction

Bighorn Construction is committed to providing our employees with a safe work environment, and to having all our employees develop a culture of safety awareness. In order to meet this commitment, we have developed several safety programs and policies that aid our employees in achieving these goals.

Safety is integrated with the other project functions of planning, communication and production. Starting with an analysis to determine what safety concerns exist on the project (and what can be done to address them), Bighorn Construction takes the steps to ensure that employees work together as a team to promote safety.

After this planning meeting, several on-site safety audits are performed to verify that all safety measures are taken in the field. Furthermore, peer observation is encouraged to be reported and discussed with the Superintendent to ensure that all employees are working in a safe manner. Finally, incentives are offered to encourage employees to work together for the safety of all.
